Last week marked a historic milestone in China’s maritime industry as the nation’s first hybrid diesel-electric maritime supply ship, Zhoushan Fu Rui’s “Fu Rui 688,” successfully completed its sea trials in Zhou Shan, ZheJiang, China. This achievement represents a significant advancement not only for China but also for the global maritime industry.
The success of “Fu Rui 688” is attributed to the collaboration of industry leaders – ZhiChuang Technology Co., Ltd., and AKA Energy Systems (Montague, Prince Edward Island) partnered to play a pivotal role by providing a comprehensive suite of new energy hybrid power systems and state-of-the-art ship automation systems. Additionally, Zhejiang’s Sunglory Ocean Technology Co., Ltd. contributed by delivering a precision intelligent control one-screen system and a ship-shore integrated system, further enhancing the ship’s capabilities.
The sea trials conducted on September 12th, exceeded all expectations, with all systems operating flawlessly and meeting the design requirements. This accomplishment signifies a giant leap forward in reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and the environmental impact of maritime operations, aligning perfectly with the goals of green shipping, energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection. It also aligns with China’s ambition to be a pioneer and leader in green shipping.
The “Fu Rui 688” has undergone a remarkable transformation in its power system, shifting from conventional fuel power to a diesel-electric hybrid system, significantly reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency. Even during battery-powered sailing, it reaches a top speed of 8 knots and seamlessly transitions between the main engine and diesel generator for high-speed sailing, optimizing performance in adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the vessel features state-of-the-art engine room automation for optimal energy utilization and an intelligent navigation system, streamlining operations and enhancing safety through real-time data transmission to shore bases.
AKA Energy Systems (AKA) played a vital role in this achievement, supplying a comprehensive suite of new energy hybrid power systems and ship automation solutions. This included China Classification Society (CCS)-approved Hybrid DC Switchboards, Energy Management Systems, and Battery Management Systems. AKA also provided production assistance, Factory Acceptance Testing, commissioning, and training, and essential documentation for the CSS Certification.
AKA’s CEO, Jason Aspin said, “This achievement marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry in China, as well as for our company. This project was AKA’s first joint hybrid propulsion project with our Chinese partners at ZhiChuang Technology and Sunglory Ocean Technology and it aligns perfectly with our mission to reduce the environmental impact in the maritime industry and drive innovation. We are grateful to all the companies involved in delivering ‘Fu Rui 688’ and taking a step towards reducing carbon footprint associated with marine operations.”
