Brushing up on basic writing skills is always a good idea. With all the different instances of capitalization in our documents, it is a good idea to revisit it often. Here are some tips on capitalization.
Units of Measurement
A good rule of thumb to follow when faced with the question of capitalizing units is to note if the unit is named after someone.
- Count Alessandro Volta – Volts – 24V
- Andre Marie Ampere – Amps – 4-20mA
We use lower case when the units are written out.
Example: Measure the voltage across resistor (–R058) and verify input power is available.
SI prefix symbols vary based on the meaning. 400mA and 400MA are two completely different values. A quick web search can provide you with a list of these. A table is also included in our style guide.
System Parts
Just because a part in our cabinet is important does not necessitate the use of capitals. Non-specific parts use plain text.
Use: main breaker not Main Breaker.
If the part is specific and requires the manufacture name, capitalize the manufacture name only.
Use: Siemens communication module, not Siemens Communication Module.
The key to staying consistent in capitalization is by following a uniform style. AKA has a style guide available in hard copy or electronic format, contact the documentation team.
